The Ondo State Government has breathed new life into the state’s tourism sector with the revival of the Mare Festival, the world-renowned mountain-climbing and cultural celebration hosted annually in Idanre, one of Nigeria’s most scenic towns.
After a period of dormancy, this year’s edition signals the government’s renewed drive to position Ondo as a leading destination for eco-tourism, adventure, and cultural heritage. The Mare Festival—a celebration of courage, endurance, and unity—draws thousands of climbers, artists, and tourists to the majestic Idanre Hills, offering a blend of sport, music, art, and indigenous culture.
“Tourism is a catalyst for job creation, youth engagement, and global recognition. Reviving Mare Festival is a statement of our government’s commitment to diversify the economy and promote Ondo State as the tourism heartbeat of Nigeria,” said an official from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Beyond the festivities, the festival is part of a larger agenda to reposition the tourism landscape. The government is upgrading infrastructure around key sites, improving accessibility, and encouraging private sector partnerships for sustainable hospitality and cultural development.
With this comeback, Ondo State is charting a new path where culture meets opportunity, ensuring that the spirit of Idanre continues to inspire visitors from across Nigeria and beyond.
